Something unexpected essay

The Unexpected Happens When everyone wakes up every morning, they normally have a pretty decent idea of what their plans are for the day, right? They go to school or work, they go home, and they go to bed.

Nothing too out of the ordinary. No one plans for their car to break down, or for their electricity to go out. Some things just happen, and everyone has to learn to take them in stride, try to move on, and get on with their lives. Near the beginning of my 8th grade year, my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer.

He had to have his right kidney surgically removed immediately. All this happened in the course of a week.

The Unexpected Happens, essay by NaomiANiemann

One day I was a normal teenager, not a care in the world, laughing and joking with my friends at school. That evening, a huge black thundercloud grew over me and followed me around for the longest time. I went through a period where I felt like two different people.

On the outside, I was me, smiling and happily conversing with my friends, but on the inside I changed. Inside I was empty. Why did this have to happen to my dad? All my friends seemed like empty-headed bimbos, carelessly living their lives, as though nothing could ever damage their ego.

Then, a few months after his kidney was removed, my dad received a new diagnosis: When we received this diagnosis, it came with a whole new slew of difficulties.

For instance, he has to take a sort of chemotherapy pill to try and shrink the spots in his lungs. Also when we got the news, I did some research and found out that individuals who had renal cell carcinoma that metastasized to their lungs had only a 20 percent chance of surviving five years.

That too changed me and made me even more bitter and outraged at the world, but only within myself. Everyone was always so proud of me, how I was holding up so well, which only made me more annoyed. They did not know, did not understand, and could not comprehend what I was going through.

Then came the day I changed, for the better. I realized that I had let myself go. So I stopped thinking about the bad things in life, and I stopped letting them drag me down.

I learned this all-too-important lesson the most difficult way possible: Some things just happen out of the blue and everyone needs to accept that. People miss so much of the beautiful phenomenon that is life if they forget what life is.

It is a gift, and everyone needs to treat it as that and appreciate that.

Often, the hardest words to write in an essay are the opening ones. When you’re doing the first draft, I’d suggest just writing your way through the introduction without worrying too much – you’ll want to come back to it when you’ve got the body and the conclusion of your essay firmly decided upon.
